brown crystal shrimp?

it's fairly common to see some brown crystal shrimp when you keep CRS and CBS together. I was just wondering how come I never see them for sale? are they that worthless and undesirable?

Not really, some people just include them when they sell them with their CBS. I used to and would let the buyer know first though. Technically they are more rare than the other two

"Brown" colored specimens are proof of Red and Black cross breeding and that is often unwanted. "Brown" is treated more as Black when selling. Also, most of the stock that stores get are from Taiwan and Japan where they believe you should and indeed keep the species separate. I hope this helps.

Lol, agree with Richard, brown is more rare. There's a breeding project: create a pure breeding Crystal "Brown" Shrimp.

Black is dominant, therefore you will see mostly black/dark offspring. The genetics are probably not exactly Mendelian, thus there is some "brown." In time, you should get a few red babies.

Justin

I personally don't consider reds and black "cross breeding" and I know many who feel the same. As for brown being unwanted... thats is up to the individual since beauty is in the eye of the beholder

I keep my blacks and reds together and I get very few brown. I would say 1 out of 40 is a brown and I tend to hord them since I am fond of them. I don't ship any out unless a request is made.

Ya...just like Richard said..brown is rare...that's true....
But are those really often unwanted????
I don't know...How about these????
OH...by the way, if started with Brown..you will have both red and black in the future..is that not good?????

Dark Brown or Black???

Actually I have many of red come out....I have to thin them out all the time.. >_<
About the Brown ones, actually not that many.........Cause what I do is once a while I keep black and red together and the black CRS could strengthens the genes of the Red one..

"brown" crystals are not the product of crossbreeding between black and red. The brown ones are actually black with less pigmentation. Just like some red shows less red due to the same reason. The same reason Africans are "black" but indeed they are different shade of darkness.

You can do a little experiment by select the "true black" crystal (very black) then house them in the same tank, I bet over time you will spot some "brown" or "not as black" crystals. The same is true to humans, both parents can have light skin, but their kids can have darker tone or vice versa. Describing color is hard because it's very subjective and depends on too many variables such as light source, mood, and diet...

If black and red do cross and produce something in between, you would expect to see a lot more "brown" or all brown offspring.

Any pics of the the chocolate shrimplets? Maybe you should isolate them and try to breed them and see what happens.

Anyone ever had a crystal brown with red spots? I have a brown with solid red spots on its tail. Looks kind of cool because the brown is more on the black end of the scale.
